Instagram Lets Creators Test Content With Trial Reels

By Julie Clover

Today, Instagram launched a new Test Reels feature that allows creators to try out new formats and content to see what works best. Test Reels are delivered to people who don’t follow the creator, giving them an idea of what’s working well that they can then share with their followers.

Test Reels allow creators to experiment with new ideas and posting frequency without worrying about losing followers or creating content that followers don’t want to see. Instagram says the feature “will help take the guesswork out of how your content will perform.”

Content that performs well in a preview reel can be shared with followers with a single tap, or can be set to automatically send to followers if it performs well after the preview.

You can share a preview reel by creating a reel and then tapping the “Preview” toggle when you upload it. Preview reels aren’t shown to people in the creator’s main grid or Results tab unless they’re later shared with everyone.

The preview period lasts for 24 hours, and then Instagram provides key engagement metrics like views, likes, comments, and shares so creators can see how the content is performing.
