Apple's new Passwords app debuted this fall as a dedicated place for passwords on every device. However, browsers weren't very well equipped with built-in support for Passwords. Luckily, there's one big extension that just got it: Apple now offers an official Passwords extension in Firefox for Mac.
Firefox extension creates a more seamless password experience
For years, Apple has offered iCloud Keychain for storing and managing passwords in the Settings app on its devices.
This fall, however, the company launched a dedicated Passwords app in iOS 18, macOS Sequoia, visionOS 2, and more. The goal was to make Passwords available anywhere and everywhere you might need them.
If you were a Firefox user, though, the experience was a bit clunky. You could access the Passwords app on macOS or use its Menu Bar app, but there was no direct integration into Firefox.
That has officially changed, as Apple has now made the “iCloud Passwords” extension available to Mac Firefox users. Here's the breakdown:
iCloud Passwords allows you to securely enter passwords from your iCloud Keychain when you sign in to websites using Firefox. Any new passwords you create in Firefox are saved to your iCloud Keychain, so they are also available on your Apple devices. The extension can also generate verification codes, which you can customize by right-clicking on the QR code.
Origins of the Apple Passwords Firefox Extension
Interestingly, the Reddit thread says that this extension appears to be created by a third-party developer. It existed before under their direction. However, Apple seems to have recently taken over and is now publishing the extension under its own name and brand.
There is no Windows-compatible version yet, but hopefully that will come later.
Either way, having access to all your saved passwords directly in Firefox will make browsing more convenient.
