Vision Pro users know that engaging video is one of the platform's strengths, but there's relatively little content on it. Apple is reportedly working on a major project to change that: upgrading a popular sports stadium with the technology needed to live stream games in immersive video on the Vision Pro.
Negotiations Could Enable Apple to Live Stream Sports in Immersive Video
Apple's Vision Pro offers a lot of unique capabilities that you can't get on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac. But one of the most impressive is immersive video, and it's especially eye-opening for sports.
The problem at the moment is that there is very little sports content available via immersive video. And what there is is never live, only short highlight reels posted months after the event.
Apple appears to have a solution to this problem: building cutting-edge technology into the popular stadium’s ongoing upgrades.
Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has shed light on the club’s ongoing talks with Apple, according to Marca.
Real Madrid’s iconic Santiago Bernabeu stadium is undergoing an expensive makeover, and Perez recently raised concerns about the stadium regularly running out of space.
The solution: live-streaming immersive video for Vision Pro.
Here’s a translated quote from Perez:
Everyone wants to come to the Santiago Bernabeu, and that's why we're talking to Apple, to be able to put on glasses and watch a game as if you were in the stadium. It would be an endless Santiago Bernabeu.
Understandably, Perez doesn't go into the technical details of what's being discussed with Apple. But from what he says, it's clear that we're talking about live immersive video for Vision Pro users.
Successful immersive test case could lead to major interest from other sports
Apple’s major investment in football clearly opens some doors for the company in its quest to create immersive video for sports.
Real Madrid’s timely renovation of the Santiago Bernabeu stadium could be another part of the stellar coincidence for Apple, too.
Live streaming of a football match in immersive video would certainly be a killer feature for many Vision Pro owners. More exciting, however, would be the potential to expand the video capture hardware to other stadiums and sports venues around the world.
If Apple can prove how immersive immersive sports can be with Real Madrid, it could see a lot of interest from other teams and even other sports around the world.
One successful test case could spark a flurry of exciting activity in this space for years to come.
