Final Cut Camera Can Now Shoot HEVC Video Encoded in Log, and More

Following the release of updates to Logic Pro and Final Cut Pro, Apple has also updated its Final Cut Camera app for iPhone. With the new version of the app, users can finally capture Log video using the HEVC codec, as well as view Log video using Apple Log LUTs, and more. Read on as we dive into the new features in Final Cut Camera.

What's New with Final Cut Camera for iPhone

One of the biggest changes in Final Cut Camera is the ability to capture HEVC video encoded in Log. Previously, Log was only available for ProRes video, which takes up much more space. Now, users can take advantage of the improved flexibility and dynamic range of Log combined with smaller HEVC files.

Additionally, the update also adds the ability to enable LUT preview while recording in Log, allowing users to see “the brightness of the original scene” in SDR or HDR with Apple’s Log LUT. For iPhone 16 Pro users, the Final Cut Camera update also enables 4K video capture at 120 fps for cinematic slow motion.

What’s more, Apple is also introducing advanced pitch and roll indicators to help users frame their footage.

For those unfamiliar, Final Cut Camera is an app from Apple that allows creators to “wirelessly connect and remotely direct every angle of their video with powerful, professional controls.” While the app was first introduced as a companion tool for controlling the iPhone camera from an iPad, it also works on the iPhone as a standalone app.

With the app, users can adjust things like white balance and manual focus while tracking zebras and metering audio. It also provides ISO and shutter speed control, and makes it easy to switch between resolutions and video formats. The interface is very simple and also displays your iPhone's battery level and remaining storage.

With Final Cut Camera, you can also easily transfer media into a Final Cut project on your iPad, or save footage directly to connected external storage. The app is available for free in the App Store and requires an iPhone running iOS 17.6 or later (while some features require the latest iPhones).
