This week, Google Maps is introducing several new features for iOS and Android users, focusing on improved navigation and trip planning tools.
Along with the Start button, a new, prominent Add Stops button is being added to make route planning easier by displaying restaurants, gas stations, and points of interest along the way. This week’s update also introduces weather reports, allowing drivers to mark and avoid hazards like uncleared roads, flooding, or poor visibility.
Arrival assistance is also being improved, with Google Maps now highlighting nearby parking and prompting users to save their parking spot. The app can then provide walking directions to your final destination using AR Live View navigation.
A more significant navigation update is planned for next month, rolling out in more than 30 metropolitan areas. The improvement will provide clearer visualization of lanes, crosswalks, and road signs, with a blue line indicating the correct lane position during turns and merges.
Looking further afield, Google announced plans to integrate its Gemini AI technology into Maps in the coming months. The feature will allow users to ask natural language questions about locations and receive recommendations based on data from more than 250 million locations worldwide. The AI implementation will also provide summary overviews and detailed answers about specific locations.
