With the release of the new M4 Mac computers this week, Apple introduced USB-C versions of the Magic Mouse, Magic Trackpad, and Magic Keyboard to continue its phasing out of the Lightning port. Apple users planning to buy these new accessories should be aware that there are currently some software limitations.
The new USB-C accessories require macOS Sequoia 15.1 to work properly, and as noted on the MacRumors forums, earlier versions of macOS do not work. There are reports from users using macOS Sonoma and Ventura who have experienced issues with the new devices. Touch ID and function keys do not work with the keyboard, and scrolling does not work with the Magic Mouse. In some cases, accessories are recognized as older devices, preventing them from working properly.
This issue isn't limited to people running older versions of macOS, as there are also reports from developers who installed the first beta of macOS Sequoia 15.2. It appears that the macOS Sequoia 15.2 beta was released before Apple could add support for the new Magic Mouse, Magic Keyboard, and Magic Trackpad.
It appears that the accessories currently require macOS Sequoia 15.1 to function properly. For those who had an older version of macOS, updating to macOS Sequoia 15.1 resolved the functionality issues, and Apple should add support for macOS Sequoia 15.2 beta coming soon.
