Now, when you are online on the platform, other users will appear in discussions.

Meta's microblogging platform, Threads, has received a lot of new features since its launch last year. However, the company just announced another new feature that users don't seem to like. Soon, other Threads users will be able to see when you're online on the platform.

Threads to Show Online Status to Other Users

The news was confirmed on Tuesday by Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri, who is also the head of Threads. In a post on the platform, Mosseri shared a screenshot of how the new activity status feature will work. Essentially, the app will display a green dot to indicate that a user is currently online on Threads.

The idea, Mosseri said, is to help users find other people online to encourage real-time interactions. The executive hopes this will “make it easier to communicate” on Threads.

“We’re introducing active status to help you find other people to interact with in real time. Only people who have active status turned on will be able to see when you’re online, and you can turn it off in your settings at any time. We hope that knowing when your people are online will make it easier to connect,” Mosseri said.

Luckily, active status, which will show when you’re online, will be optional — at least for now. Similar to Instagram, Threads will let users turn off their active status in their settings. However, turning off your status will also prevent you from seeing whether other people are online.

A few years ago, Twitter also explored the idea of an indicator showing people online, but the company ultimately abandoned the idea. Judging by the responses to Mosseri’s post, a significant number of Threads users don’t think active status is necessary.
