Since Apple discontinued the 27-inch 5K iMac, Mac users have had to look elsewhere for a comparable desktop experience. Apple, Samsung, and LG were the only display makers with 27-inch 5K monitors on the market for some time. Luckily, a fourth competitor is coming to the 27-inch 5K party, and MacBook users are in for a treat.
BenQ 5K PD2730S
BenQ, a specialist in monitors for designers and content creators, unveiled the 5K PD2730S this week in conjunction with Adobe MAX. BenQ's latest DesignVue PD monitor is a 27-inch 5K Thunderbolt 4 monitor that has been missing from BenQ's lineup.
While pricing has yet to be announced, it looks like we may have a formidable competitor to Apple's Studio Display on our hands. That's because BenQ is advertising its own “nano texture” anti-glare coating technology as an option on the PD2730S. Here's a quick rundown of BenQ's nano-matte panel technology compared to glass and matte panels:
- Glass Panels:The above features show how the panel reduces the effect of ambient light on the displayed image. A typical glass panel monitor without any of these features has a reflectivity of more than 4%</strong>.
- Matte Panels: These panels use a film substrate instead of glass and have a hard coating to diffuse ambient light, resulting in a reflectivity of approximately 3.5%.
- Nano Matte Panels: These panels, which have anti-glare and low-reflective properties, add an extra protective layer on top of the anti-glare coating, reducing the reflectivity to below 3%.
As for the brief technical specifications:
- 27″ 5K display with a high 2000:1 contrast ratio and 98% P3 color gamut for pixel-perfect accuracy
- Factory calibrated for out-of-the-box color accuracy and intuitive color matching across all displays
- Thunderbolt 4 with 90W of power for fast data transfer and full Mac compatibility
Expect more coverage once we get our hands on the new hardware and launch details are revealed.
