Worldwide Mac shipments fall 17.5% ahead of M4 updates

Global Mac computer shipments fell 17.5% year-over-year in the previous quarter, according to a new market research report. This comes as sales of all notebooks and desktops were virtually flat.

Technically, the global PC market achieved its fourth consecutive quarter of growth in Q3, as overall shipments increased year-over-year, albeit only slightly …

The PC market continues to grow

Canalys estimates overall shipments in Q3 at 66.4 million units, up 1.3% year-over-year. Unsurprisingly, growth came from notebooks at the expense of desktops.

Notebook (including mobile workstations) shipments reached 53.5 million units, up 2.8%, while desktop (including desktop workstations) shipments fell 4.6% to 12.9 million units […]

While growth in Q3 was modest, the PC market recovery is now well underway, and there are a number of positive signs pointing to stronger performance in the coming quarters.

The company expects continued growth, primarily from upgrades of enterprise Windows PCs that can't run Windows 11. Microsoft is ending support for Windows 10, forcing companies to upgrade or pay hefty fees for extended support contracts.

Mac shipments fall ahead of M4 launch

Mac shipments fell from 6.2 million in Q3 2023 to 5.1 million in the same quarter this year, a decline of 17.5%. This has caused Apple's share of the global PC market to fall from 9.5% to 7.7%.

Buyers are now likely to be waiting for the M4 Mac, the first of which is expected to be announced later this month.

Apple is expected to begin unveiling its M4 Mac lineup as early as this month, with updates to the iMac, MacBook Pro, and Mac mini to kick off the new M4 transition. While the event is likely to take place this month, the new Macs aren't expected to go on sale until November 1.

The Mac mini is expected to get the biggest update yet — or should it be the smallest? – as it shrinks to a size closer to the Apple TV box.

A series of reports and leaks regarding the upcoming M4 MacBook Pro suggest that the base model will also get a hefty spec bump: a 10-core processor (up from 8 cores), 16GB of memory, and three Thunderbolt 4 ports (up from two).

The latest leak is a Russian listing claiming that several unannounced machines are up for sale.
