macOS Sequoia 15.1 Will Ask Less About Screen Recording Permissions

With today's release of macOS Sequoia 15.1 beta 6, Apple is making another change to screen recording permissions. The company says this should mean users will see fewer pop-up dialogs asking for permissions on their Macs.

In early betas of macOS Sequoia, these screen recording permissions were designed to appear once a week. This meant that you would see a dialog asking for permissions weekly for each app that had screen recording permission. In later beta versions of macOS Sequoia, Apple adjusted the policy and began asking users monthly.

In the release notes for macOS Sequoia 15.1 beta 6, Apple says it is making further changes to reduce the number of dialogs users see:

ScreenCaptureKit: Apps that use our legacy content capture technologies now have improved user awareness policies. Users will see fewer dialogs if they regularly use apps where they have already acknowledged and accepted the risks.

Apple is not disclosing the exact details of the new screen recording permission popups. However, the company emphasizes that the changes should mean users will see “fewer dialogs” for apps they regularly use. Notably, the change in strategy comes after various workarounds have become commonplace to bypass permission dialogs entirely.

We'll be keeping an eye on this change in macOS Sequoia 15.1 and will report back with our findings. macOS Sequoia 15.1 is currently available to developers and public beta testers.
