New Unboxing Video Allegedly Shows Unannounced M4 MacBook Pro, Benchmark Results

Apple is expected to unveil the new M4 Macs later this month, with a launch scheduled for November 1. However, a new unboxing video on YouTube claims to offer us our first look at the 14-inch MacBook Pro powered by the M4 chip. There are a few interesting things to note here, including the first benchmark results for the M4 Mac…

The video was posted earlier today by Russian YouTuber Wylsacom (via Mark Gurman) and gives us a full unboxing experience of the M4 MacBook Pro.

The packaging shown in the video matches the alleged packaging leak from last month. The image shows the same wallpaper as the M3 MacBook Pro models. After the packaging leaked last month, it was reported that this M4 MacBook Pro unit was available for purchase in a private Facebook group.

The packaging also states that this M4 MacBook Pro has 512GB of storage and 16GB of RAM, as well as three Thunderbolt 4 ports, an HDMI port, an SD card slot, and MagSafe. According to the specs on the packaging, the M4 chip features a 10-core CPU and 10-core GPU. This was also previously rumored, and is an upgrade from the 8-core CPU design of the M3 chip.

Notably, the current M3 MacBook Pro only comes with two Thunderbolt 4 ports and 8GB of RAM. This leak suggests that the base model M4 MacBook Pro will come with one extra Thunderbolt 4 port and double the RAM. Mark Gurman previously suggested that all M4 Macs could start with 16GB of RAM for the first time.

Wylsacom also ran a Geekbench test, potentially giving us our first real look at the performance of the M4 chip in a Mac. The results can be found on Geekbench, where the machine is identified as a “Mac 16,1”.

  • Single-core score: 3864
  • Multi-core score: 15288

For comparison, the base M3 MacBook Pro typically scores around 3000 in single-core testing and 11800 in multi-core testing. Of course, keep in mind that the base M3 machine has two fewer CPU cores than the base M4.

Whether this leak ultimately turns out to be genuine remains to be seen. Bloomberg reported today that Apple is set to announce its first M4 Macs “around the end of October,” with a release date scheduled for Friday, November 1.
