Exclusive: iOS 18 will add text effects to iMessage

by Joe Rossignol

Apple is planning to add a new text effects feature to the Messages app on iOS 18, according to multiple sources familiar with the matter.

While iMessages can already be sent with bubble effects or full-screen effects like invisible ink or confetti, text effects will allow you to animate individual words within a message. Since the Messages app is set to support RCS in iOS 18, it's possible that text effects will also work with green bubbles.

We hope Apple will also add bold, italic, and underline formatting options. text effects, but we haven't confirmed this feature.

In addition to text effects and RCS support, the Messages app on iOS 18 is said to be getting an AI-powered autofill tool.

As a reminder, RCS support will provide improved messaging between iPhone and Android devices compared to the current SMS standard. Like iMessage, RCS offers higher-resolution photos and videos, audio messages, typing indicators, read receipts, the ability to send messages over Wi-Fi, and improved group chat features.

iOS 18 will launch in WWDC talk time is June 10, and the first beta should be available to Apple Developer Program members immediately after the presentation. The first public beta of iOS 18 will likely be released in July, with the update expected to be widely available to all compatible iPhone users in September.
