Apple TV: latest rumors about a new model and a possible price of $99

Posted by Joe Rossignol

It's been over a year and a half since the current Apple TV was released, so you might be wondering when the new model will be released. Below we summarize rumors about the next generation Apple TV, including new features and a lower price.

The current Apple TV 4K was introduced in October 2022. Key new features over the previous 2021 model include a faster A15 Bionic chip, more storage at 128GB, slightly thinner and lighter design, HDR10+ support, USB-C port on Siri Remote, lower starting price of $129 vs. $179 and more.

In January 2023, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reported that the new Apple TV was scheduled to release in the first half of 2024. :

In addition to future smart displays and a new speaker, Apple is working on updating its set-top box. A new version with the current design and a faster processor will be in development in the first half of next year, the people said.

With just one month left until the first half of 2024, it is unclear whether these timelines will remain accurate. The new Apple TV may be unveiled at the WWDC keynote on June 10, but there have been no hardware announcements at the event yet.

Here's when the previous five Apple TV models were announced:

  • Apple TV 4K third generation:October 2022
  • Apple TV 4K second generation:April 2021
  • Apple TV 4K first generation:September 2017
  • Apple TV HD:September 2015
  • Third-generation Apple TV:March 2012

Regardless of when it's unveiled, the next Apple TV is rumored to feature a faster processor than the current A15 Bionic chip, and an even lower price. Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has suggested that the next Apple TV could have a starting price of less than $100.

The second-generation (2010) and third-generation (2012) versions of the Apple TV have been priced. was $99 at launch in the US, and Apple eventually dropped the price of the third-generation model to $69, so there is a precedent for a sub-$100 Apple TV that better competes with the low-cost streaming devices sold by Google, Amazon, and Roku.

There have been no rumors of major design changes for the next Apple TV, but Gurman said Apple is considering adding a built-in camera to a future model. tvOS 17 adds the FaceTime app to Apple TV, allowing users to make video calls using the rear camera on a connected iPhone or iPad. If Apple TV gets a built-in camera, users will no longer have to rely on an external device for video calling on the TV.

If the WWDC keynote goes ahead without any new Apple TV announcement, then there will no longer be active release rumors next model.
