T-Mobile Announces UScell ​​Acquisition and Promises to Improve Rural Connectivity

T-Mobile today announced plans to acquire UScell's wireless business for $4.4 billion. Deal includes UScell ​​wireless customers, retail stores and select cellular services.


According to T-Mobile, the purchase will give millions of UScell ​​customers access to the T-Mobile network, improving connectivity in underserved rural areas. T-Mobile also plans to use UScell's spectrum and wireless resources to expand its home broadband offerings.

T-Mobile's press release suggests that wireless customers in the United States will “benefit from increased choice and competition,” The language is directed at federal regulators who will need to approve the deal. UScell ​​will retain ownership of a portion of its spectrum and towers, and T-Mobile plans to lease space for approximately 2,000 towers.

UScell ​​customers will have the option to stay on their existing plans or upgrade to a T-Mobile unlimited plan without switching costs.

T-Mobile previously acquired MetroPCS and Sprint, with the most recent merger occurring in 2020. year after it was previously canceled in 2014. US regulators were concerned about the lack of a fourth major US carrier and may be hesitant to approve another T-Mobile acquisition.
