iPhone sales recover in China amid soaring demand for smartphones

Apple's iPhone sales in China rose 52% in April, reflecting a strong recovery driven by aggressive price cuts and renewed consumer demand, Bloomberg reports.


An increase in shipments from 2.3 million units in April 2023 to 3.5 million units in April 2024, revealed according to the China Academy of Information and Science communications technology (CAICT) follows a series of strategic price cuts by Apple aimed at boosting sales in the region. Recover ‌iPhone‌ in China is part of a broader resurgence in the smartphone market, where overall sales rose 25.5% to 22.7 million units in April. CAICT data showed that ‌iPhone‌ sales contributed significantly to that growth.

The change comes after a rocky start to the year for Apple in China, where the company saw sales decline 37% in the first two months of 2024. Recovery has begun. in March with a 12% increase in shipments that will continue into April.

Apple's strategy to return to China included significant discounts on iPhones, with price cuts as high as 2,300 yuan (approximately $318) on the official Tmall website ). The discounts, double those originally offered in February, were part of an aggressive campaign to compete with local companies such as Huawei.

Bloomberg notes that Apple's market share in China may soon stabilize as consumer interest in upgrading to the new ‌iPhone‌ rises. A recent survey found that more than half of Chinese consumers are willing to spend more than 4,000 yuan (about $550) on their next phone, significantly more than the 33% who currently use premium phones. This “premiumization” trend is expected to benefit Apple just four months before the iPhone 16 lineup debuts.
