Apple adds live performance support to Shazam

By Hartley Charlton

Apple today added Live Activity support to Shazam, its free music discovery and identification app.

Shazam's live actions keep the user informed while searching for music in the background, which is especially useful when multitasking or identifying songs in other apps. Shazam's last major update arrived in January, allowing users to identify songs from other apps when listening on headphones.

Apple acquired Shazam in 2018 and has since gradually moved the app closer to ‌Apple Music‌, offering trials of the in-app streaming service and the ability to sync Shazam directly with ‌‌Apple Music&zwnj ;‌.

Shazam is free to download from the App Store. It can be accessed through Control Center on the iPhone and iPad, using Siri or Mac commands, and via widgets. Shazam version 17.11 is now available.

Apple has opened its Live Activity API to third-party ‌iPhone‌ apps with the release of iOS 16.1 in 2022, and since then many developers have successfully used this feature.
