TikTok becomes the first social network to automatically label AI-generated content

By Julie Clover

This week, TikTok announced that it has begun automatically labeling AI-generated content created on third-party platforms to ensure AI-generated images and videos are not confusing or misleading to viewers.

Content created using TikTok's artificial intelligence creation tools has been labeled AI for over a year now. but in the future, TikTok will also label images created by artificial intelligence. through other platforms. TikTok's tool will read content credentials, a technology from the Coalition for Content Origin and Authenticity (C2PA). Content credentials are designed to attach metadata to AI content, making AI tagging easier.

TikTok's AI tagging began today for images and videos, and will soon be available only for audio content. AI-generated content will have an “AI Generated” label under the username of the TikTok account.

Tagging may be gradual as content credentials must be included to identify and label content. As other platforms implement credentials, AI authentication will increase across all social networks.

In the future, TikTok will add content credentials to TikTok content that will remain when uploading images and videos, so people and other social networks can use C2PA Verify tools to identify AI content created on TikTok.
