New iPad Pro lacks mmWave 5G and ultra-wide camera

by Joe Rossignol

While the iPad Pro has been updated today with the M4 chip and more, the latest 11-inch and 13-inch models are missing two features available on some previous models, including mmWave 5G support and an ultra-wide-angle camera. .

Apple comparison page confirms cellular configurations of new iPad Pro models are limited Bands below 6 GHz for 5G. mmWave 5G was supported in the previous two generations of iPad Pro, but only in the US and nowhere else.

Apple has not yet explained why it removed mmWave support from the iPad Pro. mmWave is a set of 5G frequencies that can provide very high speeds over short distances, ideal for dense urban areas. By comparison, sub-6GHz 5G is typically slower than millimeter wave, but signals travel further, better serving suburban and rural areas.

The 10-megapixel Ultra Wide rear camera on the last three generations of iPad Pro also works missing from the latest models, which only feature a 12-megapixel wide-angle rear camera.

As we noted earlier, the cellular configurations of the latest iPad Pro and iPad Air also lack a physical SIM card slot, making them eSIM-only devices.
