iPhone 15 and 15 Plus are proving less popular among buyers this year

by Tim Hardwick

Apple's iPhone 15 Pro models were the best-selling smartphones in the United States in the first quarter of this year, according to the latest report from Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP).

‌iPhone 15 Pro‌ and Pro Max accounted for 22% and 23% of all iPhones sold in the first quarter of 2024, for a combined 45%. The iPhone 15 Plus accounted for 9% of all iPhones sold, and the ‌iPhone 15‌ and iPhone 14 were the third most popular, each holding 14% of shares.

‌iPhone 15 Pro‌ and the Pro Max share remained virtually unchanged compared to the ‌iPhone 14‌ Pro and Pro Max for the same quarter a year ago. However, Apple saw sales of the base ‌iPhone 15‌ decrease compared to last year. General combination ‌iPhone 15‌ models were lower, accounting for 68% of all iPhone sales.

On the contrary, in the first quarter of 2023 ‌iPhone 14‌ The share of all iPhones sold in this series is 7% higher, totaling 75%. The percentages show that ‌iPhone 14‌ and ‌iPhone 14‌ Plus were more popular than ‌iPhone 15‌ and ‌iPhone 15‌ Plus compared to the same quarter of the previous year.

Noting the change, CIRP comments:

We see this as a continuation of the trend of the last few quarters, as cheaper current models give up some share to more old models. The once flagship, now base iPhone 15, is no longer the top choice as the Pro and Pro Max models take over that role.

Last week, CIRP published a report stating that new ‌iPhone‌ Activations fell to lows not seen in the US smartphone market in the last six years.

CIRP reported that the number of installed Apple smartphones exceeds registered activations, but Apple's share of new ‌iPhone‌ activations have fallen from 40% to 33% over the past year, indicating a shift away from the higher market shares Apple enjoyed in previous years.
