During his meeting with Joko Widodo, Cook stressed mutual interest in stimulating local production to support Indonesia's economic growth. “We've talked about the president's desire to see manufacturing in the country, and we'll keep an eye on that,” Cook told reporters later.

Indonesia is actively seeking to attract foreign manufacturing to boost its economic development. , as the Widodo administration seeks to become a new hub for international business. This opens up new opportunities for Apple as it pursues its strategy to reduce its dependence on Chinese manufacturing, which is largely run by its assembly partner Foxconn.

Apple is seeking to diversify its supply chain amid geopolitical tensions, economic slowdown and other risks such as production disruptions caused by COVID lockdowns in China. With production shifts already open in Vietnam and India, Apple is considering further expansion in Southeast Asia.

“I think the investment opportunities in Indonesia are limitless. There are many great places to invest and we are investing. We believe in this country,” Cook added.

The meeting took place shortly after Cook's visit to Vietnam, where he met with Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh. In Hanoi, Cook laid out plans to deepen Apple's investments and increase spending with local suppliers, bolstering the company's push to expand its presence in the region.
