iPadOS 17.5 Confirms New Display Technology for Next-Generation iPad Pro

Apple has been working on new iPads for a long time, as the company last introduced new iPads in October 2022. The next-generation iPad Pro is rumored to feature OLED displays for the first time—and the first beta of iPadOS 17.5 seems to confirm this.

The new iPad Pro will feature OLED displays

As we dig into the iPadOS beta code 17.5, which was released to developers last week, we find more mentions of unreleased iPads. This time, the links confirm new display technology for some of the rumored new iPads.

9to5Mac has found new display firmware for four new iPad models:

  • iPad16.3
  • iPad16.4
  • iPad16.5
  • iPad16.6

Based on our analysis, these are the next generation iPad Pro identifiers, which should be available in two different sizes with Wi-Fi and cellular options. The firmware suggests that these iPads will feature OLED displays, and also confirms that there will be different suppliers for the 11-inch and 12.9-inch versions.

A recent DSCC report states that the launch of the new iPads has been delayed due to manufacturing constraints on the new displays. LG is expected to produce all 12.9-inch OLED panels, while LG and Samsung will produce 11-inch panels.

The new Apple Pencil is also on the way

Earlier this month we reported on the new “squeeze”” gesture for Apple Pencil found in iPadOS 17.5 beta code. 9to5Mac has discovered even more evidence of a new generation of Apple Pencil.

In addition to the “compression”” gesture, there are also two other new gestures: “LongSqueeze” and “Double Squeeze.” The Apple Pencil 2 only supports the double-tap gesture and does not have pressure sensors on its surface, suggesting that these gestures are intended for the unreleased Apple Pencil model.

In January, 9to5Mac reported code hints in iPadOS 17.4. on the new Apple Pencil with Find My support. There is currently no Apple Pencil model that can be tracked using the app.

According to Bloomberg, Apple plans to introduce both the new iPad Pro and iPad Air, as well as an updated Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil 3 will be released in the second week of May.
