Pixelmator Pro adds support for text editing in PDF files

by Tim Hardwick

Pixelmator Pro 3.5.8 is available in the Mac App Store, and the latest update to the popular image-editing app brings the ability to edit text in PDF files, along with several other notable new additions.

Pixelmator recently added support for vector PDF files to the app, allowing users to import images, shapes, and text elements in a portable document format into as separate layers.

The latest version has expanded this support so that users can edit imported text as normal text layers. In practice, this means that existing text in PDFs can be more easily replaced, formatted, and styled using Pixelmator Pro's tools. As the developers explain:

As a rule, text in PDF documents cannot be edited directly. Instead, they are saved as vector shapes so that documents look consistent across platforms and apps. To make text editable again, Pixelmator Pro extracts various embedded data from the original PDF file, allowing you to restore the original text, fonts, and formatting. Even if some of these elements are missing, such as if the original font isn't installed on your Mac, you can still import text, select a different font, and continue editing.

Plus, new editing options text means users can easily export Apple Keynote and Pages projects and continue editing them in Pixelmator Pro. All text remains fully editable using native fonts, including the SF Pro font used throughout the Apple ecosystem.

In this update, the Style tool has been improved to make it easier to create custom paths around text layers. Users now have the ability to add strokes inside, inside, or outside text, choose different stroke ends and angles, and add dashed strokes.

Pixelmator Pro 3.5.8 also includes 12 new templates for the web, social media, and much more. All templates include a selection of alternative color palettes to customize the theme to suit your individual requirements.

Pixelmator Pro is available exclusively on the Mac App Store as a free upgrade for existing users and $49.99 for new customers. A free, unlimited, seven-day trial of the software is also available on the Pixelmator website.
