Leak Claims to Reveal iPhone 16 Battery Dimensions… with a Bizarre Twist

Today's new leak claims to contain detailed information about iPhone 16 battery sizes. According to this dubious rumor, iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will have larger batteries than their iPhone 15 counterparts. However, the iPhone 16 Plus will reportedly take a step back…

As a reminder, here is the battery capacity of the iPhone 15 line:

  • iPhone 15: 3349 mAh
  • iPhone 15 Plus: 4383 mAh
  • iPhone 15 Pro: 3274 mAh
  • iPhone 15 Pro Max: 4422 mAh

Today's leak came from an anonymous account on Weibo. I approached this with a healthy dose of skepticism, since this source does not yet have a proven track record of accurate leaks. That said, here's what we can expect from the iPhone 16's battery size, according to the account:

  • iPhone 16: 3,561 mAh (up 6.3%)
  • iPhone 16 Plus: 4006 mAh (down 8.6%)
  • iPhone 16 Pro: 3355 mAh (up 2.5%)
  • iPhone 16 Pro Max: 4676 mAh ( an increase of 5.7%)

As MacRumors notes, these numbers are consistent with Majin Boo's previous posts on social networks.

These capacity numbers don't give the full picture of what to expect from real-world iPhone battery life.

When battery capacity increases, Apple has two ways to manage the change. Apple could focus on improving battery life and opt for smaller performance gains. It can also do the opposite: keep battery life and efficiency roughly the same while increasing performance significantly.

Also worth keeping in mind: the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max are rumored to be slightly larger screens than their predecessors. This means that any increase in battery capacity will likely be offset by the additional power consumption of larger screens.

An interesting twist this time is the claim that the iPhone 16 Plus will actually have a smaller battery than for iPhone 16 Plus. his predecessor. This doesn't make much sense at all. Apple has repeatedly touted the battery life of the iPhone 15 Plus in its advertising. It's possible that Apple believes it can deliver the same battery life as the iPhone 16 Plus despite having a smaller physical battery due to other efficiency changes. In turn, this would theoretically make the iPhone 16 Plus even lighter than it is already.
