iPadOS 17.5 beta hints at battery capacity and cycle counter menu on future iPads

by Joe Rossignol

Apple may be planning to expand the iPhone's Battery Health menu for future iPad models, based on evidence found in the iPadOS 17.5 beta.

As MacRumors contributors Steve Moser and Aaron Perris discovered, the code in the first beta of iPadOS 17.5 includes several new references to the Battery Health menu on the iPad. was released to developers earlier this week. The menu is expected to display the iPad's maximum remaining battery capacity and cycle count.

Example lines of code added to the iPadOS 17.5 beta:

  • “The iPad should be used regularly when not connected to a power source to ensure maximum capacity.”
  • “This is the number of times the iPad has used battery power.”
  • ”The iPad battery is working properly.”
  • “iPad batteries, like all rechargeable batteries, have a limited life and may require servicing or replacement over time.”
  • “The original battery was designed to maintain its capacity X at X cycles under ideal conditions. Actual battery performance depends on a number of variables, including how iPad is used and regularly charged. The one-year warranty includes service for defective batteries in addition to rights under local consumer protection laws. “

None of the existing iPad models in the first iPadOS 17.5 beta have a visible Battery Health menu, leading us to believe that the menu may be limited to the new iPad Pro and iPad models Air. These are rumored to be released in May, and there will likely be other new iPads in the future. Apple has been showing iPhone battery capacity information for years, but cycle count information is currently limited to the latest iPhone 15 series.

Apple will likely release iPadOS 17.5 to the general public in May. Given that this is code in beta, we can't guarantee that the Battery Health menu will be added to the iPad, but Apple is definitely working above this.
