Apple may use Google Gemini to bring some AI features to iPhone

In addition to using Gemini to implement features in its apps and services, Google offers its LLM to third-party developers. Apple is reportedly in talks with Google to license Gemini for the iPhone.

According to Bloomberg, “active talks are underway to allow Apple to license Gemini, Google's suite of generative AI models to power some of the new features coming to iPhone software this year.” Apple has also held talks with OpenAI, which powers Microsoft's artificial intelligence capabilities.

Apple is specifically looking for partnerships in cloud-based generative artificial intelligence, and today's report cites text and image generation as an example of what Gemini can be used for. At the same time, Apple is working to offer its own AI models and capabilities on devices in the upcoming release of iOS 18.

Discussions are still ongoing, and it is unclear what the AI agreement will be called. This would be a significant expansion of the existing relationship – the default search engine – between the two companies.

They probably should have used some of that $10 billion spent on cars to fund artificial intelligence instead.
