Apple is developing an artificial intelligence tool to help developers write code for applications

by Julie Clover

Apple is working on an updated version of Xcode that will include an artificial intelligence tool for code generation, Bloomberg reports. The AI tool will be similar to Microsoft's GitHub Copilot, which will be able to generate code based on natural language queries and convert code from one programming language to another.

The Xcode AI tool will be able to predict and complete blocks of code, allowing developers to optimize the app creation process. Apple is currently testing this functionality internally and plans to make it available to third-party software developers “as early as this year.”

Apple is also testing AI-generated code for app testing and has asked some engineers to try it out these features are in-house.

The AI capabilities added to Xcode will join several other AI features Apple plans to add to Siri and other built-in apps. Some new features may include the ability to create playlists in Apple Music and create slideshows in Keynote. Apple is also working on improved Spotlight search capabilities. Search can cover specific features in apps and can also answer complex questions because the feature is built using large language models.

According to Bloomberg, Apple software chief Craig Federighi asked employees to create as many new AI. maximum possible features for iOS 18, iPadOS 18 and macOS 15. Apple plans to introduce “many new artificial intelligence features” and ‌iOS 18‌ will be marketed as one of the biggest iPhone upgrades since its release. Some AI features will come to macOS, but Apple plans to “take a phased approach to AI development” and some features won't arrive “in the coming years.”
