Material costs exceed $1,500 and exceed the retail price of many current headsets, including the $999 Meta Quest Pro, or $1,499 at launch.

Omdia believes the most expensive element of the headset is Sony's two micro OLED displays, costing $228 each. The displays, with a resolution of around 3380 pixels per inch, are perhaps the most important parts to provide the high resolution and image quality that Apple requires for the product.

Displays are also more expensive than the chipsets used to power the device. Secondly, the chipset includes an M2 chip as well as a dedicated R1 chip that controls the sensors.

The very high cost of producing each headset makes sense for Apple, despite the prospect of minimal profits from the first-generation device. With updated models expected in the future, as well as improvements in component manufacturing and the benefits of economies of scale, Apple will eventually be able to reduce hardware costs per device.

It probably won't make much profit from the original Apple Vision Pro, but Apple has a good chance of doing the same with later models.
