New Rivian R1 EVs Offer Apple Wallet Car Key Support, Apple Music with Spatial Audio

Today, Rivian introduced its second-generation R1S and R1T cars, which our friends at Electrek talked about in detail. However, Apple users should pay attention to two new features. While Rivian still doesn't support CarPlay, it does add support for Apple's car key platform, as well as Apple Music with Spatial Audio and Dolby Atmos.

Rivian adds car key and Apple Music

Apple& Feature #8217; Car Key allows users to add their car keys to the Wallet app, then use the Wallet app on iPhone or Apple Watch to lock, unlock, and start the car. The feature was first introduced at WWDC 2020 and is still rolling out to new vehicles.

In its press release announcing the new R1T and R1S, Rivian says:

Rivian owners can use their car keys in Apple Wallet on iPhone and Apple Watch, or with select Google Pixel devices, making it easy to unlock and start their cars, and share digital keys with family and friends.

At the same time, Rivian vehicles equipped with a “premium audio system” ” the package now offers Dolby Atmos support. Customers can sign up for Rivian's new Connect+ service to gain access to Apple Music. Rivian says it worked closely with Apple to develop this interface, including support for Spatial Audio and Dolby Atmos:

Connect+, a new subscription service, supports video streaming via Google Cast and provides access to more than 3,000 apps, seamlessly bringing your favorite entertainment directly to your R1's central display. For Connect+, Rivian also worked closely with the Apple Music team to deeply integrate the feature into Rivian's software platform. Connect+ from Rivian gives customers ad-free access to the Apple Music catalog of more than 100 million songs and 30,000 playlists. With Rivian Premium Audio, they'll also be able to hear audio everywhere with Apple Music's Spatial Audio technology with Dolby Atmos.
