Apple's new USB-C peripherals for Mac don't work with macOS versions prior to macOS Sequoia 15.1, nor the current beta 15.2

While Apple says its new Magic Keyboard and USB-C Magic Mouse will work with devices that are years old, they won’t do so without a special update. Apple lists compatible Macs all the way back to 2018, but doesn’t say users need to update to macOS Sequoia 15.1.

On macOS Sequoia 15 or earlier, Touch ID and function keys don’t work on the new Magic Keyboard. While there don’t seem to be any reports of the Magic Trackpad crashing, the Magic Mouse can’t scroll.

Luckily, all of the compatible Macs listed are also compatible with macOS Sequoia. However, they include the 2018 Mac mini and 2019 iMac, which are Intel-based and therefore not fully supported by macOS Sequoia.

As first spotted by MacRumors, these peripherals have also been reported to not work with macOS Sequoia 15.2. This is still in developer beta, so Apple will likely address this issue before releasing macOS Sequoia 15.2 to the public.

The only obvious difference in the new versions of the peripherals is that they have moved from Lightning to USB-C. It’s unclear why there would be any issues with their wireless connectivity, and yet the reports seem to focus solely on that.

Apple’s list of compatible devices for the peripherals also lists many iPads, starting with the iPad Air 2. So far, there have been no reports of issues using the peripherals with iPads.
