Apple is in the process of upgrading Siri to catch up with AI engines like ChatGPT, but the update will roll out in stages throughout 2025 and 2026.
The company has already made some minor changes to Siri, including the ability to type commands, a refreshed interface, and an improved ability to handle pauses in users’ speech. Apple will also implement better interactions between Siri and apps and better integration with personal data starting with iOS 18.4, which is expected in spring 2025.
One of the big changes users will notice soon will be integration with OpenAI’s ChatGPT. However, Bloomberg reports that this is more of a “patch” to give Siri more of an AI feel while the company works on its own generative AI integration.
Apple’s plans for its new Siri engine will likely be unveiled at WWDC in June 2025 and will likely be available to users in spring 2026 with iOS 19.4. This is expected to be a truly complete overhaul of Siri, bringing all the incremental changes together into a single whole.
Users will perceive the changes more as a series of updates and improvements over the next 18 months. However, the larger vision within Apple is a new foundation for Siri that relies less on outside help to respond to user queries and commands.
