iOS 18.1 includes the ability to set a “primary” email address and change your iCloud email address

By Julie Clover

iOS 18.1 introduces a new option to set a “Primary” email address in the Settings app, making it easier to change the primary email address associated with your Apple account. The primary email address is the one that’s visible to other people when you collaborate on and share documents, send calendar invites, and more.

Previously, Apple didn’t make it easy to change your Apple account email address (or Apple ID), even though it’s sometimes visible to other people. To change your Apple account email address, you used to have to delete the email address you were using, choose a different one, and go through a verification process.

Now, you can change your email address and continue using your previous email address to sign in alongside your new primary one. This setting also includes the ability to change your iCloud.com or me.com email address, so if you have an address you don't like, you can finally replace it with something else.

Before iOS 18.1, Apple didn't allow users to delete, change, or disable their primary iCloud Mail address. You could set up an alias and use that instead, but your primary email address would still sometimes be visible to others. For those with the embarrassing ‌iCloud‌ email address, there is now an option to change it completely rather than relying on a nickname.
