Apple revokes California self-driving car testing permit after abandoning car project

Joe Rossignol

Just over six months after Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reported that Apple had abandoned its plans to release an electric car, the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has revoked Apple's permit to test self-driving cars, macReports reports.

The report says the DMV received confirmation from Apple that the permit was being revoked on September 25, and the permit was revoked on September 27. While the decision is unsurprising given Gurman's report earlier this year, it's effectively the final nail in the coffin of Apple's decade-long EV project.

The permit allowed Apple to test a self-driving car with a human safety driver on any public road in California. Apple received the permit in 2017, and macReports reported that it would have been in effect until April 30, 2025, if it hadn't been revoked.

Apple has been using leased Lexus SUVs equipped with an array of sensors and cameras to test various self-driving technologies on California streets.
