Review: ZUGU iPad Pro Case Perfectly Combines Functionality and Protection

Tim Hardwick

I recently had the opportunity to test the latest Zugu case for the 13-inch iPad Pro M4, and I was impressed with its combination of style and functionality.

While this case was designed for the latest iPad Pro, it retains the key features that have made Zugu a popular choice among iPad users for the company’s 14 years in business.

Design and Protection

When I took the Zugu case out of the box, its minimalist appearance immediately caught my eye. I chose the black color, which has an understated, professional look. The case also comes in slate (a soft blue), berry (a rich red), and pine (a deep green). The soft faux leather exterior feels great in your hand and provides a secure grip, unlike some slippery plastic alternatives.

Underneath the exterior is a tough combination of TPU and polycarbonate that feels like it offers pretty decent drop protection. (I haven't had any mishaps yet, but it's certainly reassuring.) Thick bumpers around the edges provide an extra layer of protection, especially for the corners of the screen, which is something I always look for in a case. The volume and power button covers are also nice and rubbery.

I was pleased to find that it has a soft microfiber interior, which helps prevent scratches on the iPad itself. Despite these protective features, the case itself is relatively light at 515 grams and is only about half an inch thick with the iPad inside and the lid closed. All the openings for the speakers and ports are well-aligned, while the top cover is a particularly noticeable protective feature and completely covers the screen when closed. It also works well with the iPad’s sleep/wake feature, which is a nice extra layer of protection against scratches and minor bumps when you’re throwing it in your bag during your commute.

Versatility and Convenience

The adaptability of the Zugu case is definitely its standout feature. Its adjustable magnetic stand offers 10 different angles, making it suitable for a variety of activities, whether browsing, typing, drawing with the Apple Pencil, or watching media. An additional thoughtful detail is the inclusion of vents to prevent overheating during prolonged use or intense gaming bouts.

During my testing, I found the magnetic functionality to be particularly good. By flipping out and extending the magnetic feet in the stand, I could easily attach my iPad to metal surfaces like the refrigerator door. If you’re following recipe instructions in the kitchen, this will free up valuable countertop space. Just be careful not to slam the refrigerator door while the iPad is attached.

Zugu also includes some neat storage options for the Apple Pencil. A groove along the side makes it easy to snap in the wireless charger, and an elastic pocket on the back provides extra security during transport.

Wrapping Up

Considering that the 13-inch iPad Pro starts at $1,299, there’s no point in skimping when it comes to keeping it protected at all times. I wouldn’t skimp when it comes to a laptop case, and the same applies to this case. For me, the Zugu M4 iPad Pro Case offers a compelling balance of protection, functionality, and style at a competitive starting price of $79.99.

Its versatile stand options, secure magnetic mount, and thoughtful design features like vents and Apple Pencil integration set it apart from many of its competitors. While the magnets are generally strong, I'd still advise caution when mounting the case on a vertical surface. Overall, it's a solid choice for anyone looking for a premium, feature-rich case for their iPad Pro.

Where to Buy

The Zugu iPad Pro Case is available directly from Zugu, starting at $79.99. Zugu also offers cases for other iPad models, including the 11-inch iPad Pro, standard iPad, iPad Air, and iPad mini. Every purchase of a Zugu case also donates funds to Children International, a humanitarian organization that helps children around the world learn the skills they need to escape poverty. According to Zugu’s website, the company has donated more than $1 million to that cause to date.

Note: Zugu provided MacRumors with a 13-inch iPad Pro m4 case for the purposes of this review. No other compensation was received.
