How to Use Built-in Text Prediction and Other AutoCorrect Features in Pages

Pages' new built-in text prediction can be a useful tool if you know how to use it.

Pages users may have recently noticed that the app is trying to predict what you're trying to say. Likewise, you may be wondering how to get this feature to work in your Pages app.

Inline text prediction has been added to Pages in recent updates. It joins a host of other autocorrect options that can make Pages a little more usable.

How to Enable Inline Text Prediction in Pages

The first step to actually using inline text prediction is to make sure it's enabled. It's actually a system-wide setting on macOS.

Inline predictive text can only be enabled system-wide.

  1. Open System Preferences.
  2. Go to Keyboards settings.
  3. Under Text Input heading, select Edit
  4. Enable Show inline predictive text.

This setting will enable inline predictive text in compatible apps system-wide on your Mac. But most importantly, it will let you take advantage of inline text prediction in Pages.

How to Use Inline Text Prediction in Pages

Using inline text prediction in Pages is actually quite simple. As you type, you'll see the completed word or phrase in slightly fading text.

The text prediction will always look the same, no matter what font color you use.

To use this prediction, all you need to do is press tab, space, or return. Any of these options will fill in the predicted text and move you to the space before the prediction.

If the hint you are presented with is not exactly what you are looking for, you can simply continue typing and the hint will disappear.

How to Use Pages' Other Autocorrection Options

Beyond the built-in text suggestion, Pages actually has a number of useful autocorrection options. These options include:

  • Correct spelling
  • Correct capitalization
  • Automatically detect lists
  • Automatically create hyperlinks for URLs, email addresses, and phone numbers
  • Automatically format fractions
  • Use quotation marks
  • Replace text

Some of these options are the most basic autocorrect features, while others are a little more advanced.

Pages has a variety of autocorrect options for different purposes.

For example, text replacement allows you to replace certain characters with more complex characters that are not as easy to type. Pages offers several default replacement options, such as replacing “(c)” with the correct “c” in a circle, which means copyrighted.

The actual replacements can be customized in Pages's settings.

  1. Open Pages.
  2. In the menu bar, click Pages.
  3. Select Settings.
  4. In the Settings window, click the Auto-Correction tab.
  5. Under the Replacement: heading, click the “+” button.
  6. Fill the Replace column with the text you'll be entering.
  7. Fill the With column with the replacement text.

With Pages' built-in text prediction and numerous autocorrection options, Apple's default writing app can be a very useful writing tool. And with the ability to customize its autocorrection settings, you can tailor its usefulness to your needs.
