Report Says iOS 18's AI Cloud Features Will Have Strong Privacy Protections

iOS 18 is expected to include new generative AI features for iPhone with a mix of on-device and cloud processing, and a new report outlines Apple's proposed privacy efforts for cloud features.

Apple's AI servers will presumably be powered by a combination of the M2 Ultra and M4 chips it uses in Macs and iPads. According to The Information's Wayne Ma, Apple plans to use Secure Enclave in its chips “to help isolate data processed on its servers so that it is not visible to the wider system or Apple.” Technical details about Secure Enclave are outlined in Apple's Platform Security Guide.

The report says this “approach to confidential computing” will have strong privacy protections:

Thanks to the approach to confidential computing, Apple will be able to process AI-related data in the cloud, making it extremely difficult for hackers to gain access to the data even in the event of a data leak. This will also reduce Apple's burden of having to hand over personal data from its servers if requested by government or law enforcement.

The report added that Apple has a long-term goal of bringing the computing power of future wearables devices to servers running on Apple silicon chips. The move could allow Apple to develop a thinner and lighter Vision Pro headset or future Apple Glasses.

More details can be found in the full report on The Information website.
