Customizing App Icons and Creating New Emojis in iOS 18

Replacing default app icons will finally be possible in iOS 18

New In The report states that further improvements to both the Home screen and various Apple apps will arrive in iOS 18 in the fall of 2024.

The upcoming iOS 18, expected to be announced at WWDC in June, will include the usual array of new features. along with AI-powered improvements. Previous reports suggested that Photos, Safari, Siri, Voice Memos and Notes, among other apps, would get AI-powered capabilities.

Another potential application of artificial intelligence technology will appear in Messages: the app will be able to offer new custom emoji based on what the user is sending text messages. This will be in addition to the ever-expanding library of standard emojis that work across platforms.

Apple will also give users additional freedom to customize their home screens. In addition to the previously mentioned posts about free placement and grouping of app icons, more customization options are coming soon.

Bloomberg reports that iOS 18 will give users the ability to change app icons, although it's unclear how far Apple will go with this.

As an example of customizing the app icon, users may want to change the new black Social Service X icon back to the sky blue color used in Twitter's name. It could also be changed, for example, so that all sports-related apps have a red icon, and banking and finance apps so that they have green icons.

It is unlikely that complete replacement of app icons will be officially allowed, such as allowing users to replace the X app icon with the old Twitter icon.

The company will reveal more about its plans for iOS 18 at WWDC, starting June 10, 2024.
