Apple releases iOS 17.5.1 with fix for photo reappearing bug

By Julie Clover

Apple today released iOS 17.5.1 and iPadOS 17.5.1, minor updates to the iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 operating system updates released last September. Updates 17.5.1 will appear a week after the launch of iOS 17.5 and iPadOS 17.5.

iOS 17.5 .1 and iPadOS 17.5.1 can be downloaded over-the-air to eligible iPhones and iPads by going to Settings > General > Software Update.

According to Apple's release notes, updates include Fixed an issue where images could reappear in the Photos library even after being deleted.

This update contains important bug fixes and resolves a rare issue where photos whose database had been corrupted could reappear in the Photos Library even if they had been deleted.

There have been several complaints from iPhone and iPad users who saw their old, deleted photos resurface after installing the iOS 17.5 update. Images deleted back in 2010 have resurfaced, leading to confusion and concern about what's going on. Apple's information today indicates that this was a database corruption issue, and iOS 17.5.1 should resolve the issue.
