Turn video into GIF on iPhone and iPad

Tim Hardwick

Animated GIFs have become popular on the Internet. Invented in 1987, looping silent video clips can be found everywhere on the internet, from social media to messaging platforms. They are often used to express emotions, convey ideas, or simply to make people laugh.

Because GIF files are very short, GIF files load quickly and play automatically, so they report what you want instantly and without effort on the part of the viewer. What's more, with Apple's Shortcuts app, you can quickly and easily turn video clips into GIFs on your iPhone and iPad without even downloading anything.

The following steps will show you how.

  1. Open the Shortcuts app.
  2. On the Gallery tab, find “Video to GIF,” click the shortcut in the results, then click Add Shortcut .
  3. Launch a shortcut by tapping its card in the My Shortcuts tab.

  4. You will be presented with a list of videos from your photo library , which you can turn into GIFs. Select the clip you want to convert.
  5. If the video is too long, you'll be prompted to trim it by dragging the chevrons on both ends of the clip. After that, click Save.
  6. Click the Share button below the preview window to Save the image or choose a sharing method. When you're done, click Done.

If you want more control when creating your own GIFs, consider using a dedicated GIF maker tool like GIPHY. The application is free to download. It includes additional features including stickers and effects that you can apply to your creations.
