App Store 2023 Report Shows Growth in Downloads, Developers, and Uninstalls

Apple's recent App Store Transparency Report notes significant growth in app downloads and registered developers, and details recent app removals due to government bans.

Every year, Apple publishes an App Store Transparency Report, which provides a comprehensive analysis of its operations. It provides valuable information about user interactions, app reviews, developer activities, and other interesting facts.

The company has published its 2023 transparency report and shows impressive growth in various metrics compared to 2022. For example, the App Store saw an increase in user activity in 2023. Average weekly visitors stood at 734,673,588, up from 656,739,889 in 2022.

Similarly, weekly app downloads rose to 787,999,950 from 747,873,877 in the previous year, indicating a thriving market for app developers. Meanwhile, the number of registered Apple developers also grew significantly, reaching 42,219,169 compared to 36,974,015 in 2022.

One statistic the company highlights is its efforts to prevent fraud. In 2023, Apple's fraud prevention efforts were significant, with $1,838,127,451 in fraudulent transactions prevented.

The App Store then reviewed 6,892,500 application applications, of which 1,763,812 were rejected for various reasons. The main reasons for rejection were 1,132,613 cases of performance problems, 295,497 applications with design problems, and 103,629 security violations.

During the review, 277,923 applications were ultimately approved after the initial reasons for rejection were addressed.

In January 2023, Apple promised to provide greater transparency in removing apps from its store and explain why it does so. Topping the list were games with 17,853 removals, utilities with 17,779 and business applications with 10,560.

The top reasons for removal were 76,887 design violations, 35,245 cases of fraud and 1,156 cases of violation intellectual property rights.

Government intervention was prominent in app removals, with 14,629 apps removed due to regulatory demands. Most of these deletions — 12,851 apps – Happened in mainland China, where 1,067 gaming apps were removed for lacking the legally required GRN license.
