Apple closer to ChatGPT deal with OpenAI

ChatGPT is now in the App Store

Negotiations between Apple and OpenAI have progressed so far that a deal is reportedly close to completion , which could somehow bring ChatGPT's generative AI technology to iOS 18.

The report, published late Friday, did not provide details. However, it claims that Apple and OpenAI are “finalizing terms” to use ChatGPT in iOS 18.

The report also states that Apple is still in talks with Google regarding Gemini. It is less clear how far these discussions have progressed.

While Friday's report from Bloomberg hints at a deal being imminent, it all appears to be tied to Apple's overall strategy to offer an AI App Store. There are rumors that the company plans to offer smaller, in-house developed models for mobile devices while outsourcing LLM to larger existing companies such as Google.

As with any rumors about Apple's artificial intelligence plans, it's best to take them with a grain of salt. Six years ago, Apple hired artificial intelligence and search maven John Giannandrea. And the hire came after eight years at Google developing machine learning for the search engine giant.

And Apple's efforts have been going on for some time. Since 2023, just days after that year's WWDC, Apple has been widely expected to unveil its own AI efforts at WWDC. It will likely use the Safari browser with the help of artificial intelligence and is expected to include a more conversational and versatile Siri, as well as a generative AI system that allows for chatting.

Apple also plans to use on-device processing as a key benefit for customers. This is somewhat underscored by Apple's remarks during its recent iPad event, which stated that the company has been shipping devices with AI-optimized hardware for years.

There has also been a lot of discussion about Ajax, LLM, which could cover many different functions that Siri could theoretically do. For example, Apple is expected to offer text summarization that analyzes whether contacts are engaged and provide Spotlight with smarter results.

And we have reported similar technology that is expected to be included throughout the system to help summarize voice notes and other audio sources. This is also expected to be on the device.

Although competitors took the path of collecting data from publicly available sources, causing criticism, Apple thought differently. Instead, it offered millions of dollars to publishers for access to news archives while maintaining its own artificial intelligence training.
