New iPad Pros support lower refresh rates but lack Always-On Display

By Joe Rossignol

The new 11-inch and 13-inch iPad Pro models feature OLED displays with refresh rates up to 10Hz, but the devices still lack the always-on display feature found on the iPhone and Apple Watch. Yes, according to Apple technical specifications.

Although the iPad Pro has supported ProMotion since 2017. , until now the device only supported refresh rates from 24Hz to 120Hz. According to display expert Ross Young, the new iPad Pro models use low-power LTPO technology, allowing the display to be reduced to 10Hz for static content. This change will help reduce power consumption, but the stated battery life is generally unchanged from the previous generation of iPad Pro.

The same situation happened a few years ago with iPhone 13 Pro models, which also support ProMotion. up to 10 Hz, but there is no always-on display option. The feature has finally arrived on iPhones with iPhone 14 Pro models, which can go as low as 1Hz, and Apple Watch models with an always-on display also hit 1Hz.

Overall, the iPad Pro is unlikely to get the always-on option the display is turned on until it too supports a 1Hz refresh rate.

Apple says iPad Pro now features “advanced Tandem OLED technology, which uses two OLED displays.” panels and combines the light from both to deliver phenomenal full-screen brightness.” The new iPad Pro models can deliver up to 1,000 nits of full-screen brightness for SDR content, up from 600 nits for the previous generation models.

The new iPad Pro models are available to order starting today and launch on Wednesday. May 15
