Fingers crossed Spotify can launch lossless audio in 2024

After years of promises and lack of results, a new leak suggests that Spotify may actually be close to launching audio without losses on your service. May be.

Lossless audio is a music streaming feature that claims to provide extremely high-quality audio thanks to incredibly high bitrates. This is a big plus for audiophiles, but not every major streaming service offers it.

Two weeks after it was leaked that Spotify HiFi might finally be coming, another collection of leaks has emerged offering more details. According to another Reddit leak spotted by The Verge, one of the changes is a rebranding from “HiFi” to the commonly used term “Lossless.”

A new leak from u/OhitsTom consists of screenshots allegedly taken from version 1.2.36 of the service's Windows application. The Streaming Quality section lists the Lossless option as the highest of the five available.

Lossless is music that plays at up to 2117 kbps and up to 15.9 megabytes per minute. In comparison, “Very High” is 320 kbps, consuming 2 MB per minute.

Lossless audio is also FLAC 24-bit/44.1 kHz. There is an additional note that the lossless format will “play when available” if this option is set, and is available “for limited songs.”

The images also show a compatibility checker that offers additional tips for downloading lossless music. He also warns that Bluetooth may provide very high quality audio, but not full lossless support.

A wired connection is the best way to enjoy Lossless. However, the same section states that users can use Spotify Connect on speakers.

Even though this feature appears in the UI, the poster claims that this feature is only present in the UI but does not work. It appears that listening to lossless music from Spotify is not possible, at least until launch.

Just the latest chapter in a long line of broken promises

New leaks about Spotify getting lossless audio may offer little comfort to users. Mainly because it was in development for so long.

In February 2022, Spotify HiFi was announced as a way for users to stream lossless CD quality audio formats. At the time, it was expected to launch later in 2021.

Two years later, the question about the prospects of the service was raised again. This time, a “Supremium” level was offered, which is expected to launch at the end of 2023.

If the service does launch this time, the Spotify feature will arrive long after competitors have rolled out theirs.

Although Apple Music announced Lossless in May 2021, it took less than a month before the feature became generally available. Unlike the Spotify rumors, Apple's Lossless feature was included with an existing subscription.

Many other major services support lossless streaming, including Apple Music, Tidal, Amazon Music and Pandora.
