New Apple Pencil with haptic feedback and new gestures

In addition to the new iPad Pro and iPad Air lineup, Apple's May 7 event will also feature updates to iPad accessories, as well as new generation of the Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil.

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports today that the new Pencil will include haptic feedback for the first time. This should make using a digital stylus more realistic.

Although the details are small, you can imagine how the haptic feedback generated by a pencil might vary depending on the tool selected in the current drawing application. For example, in Pencil mode, the pencil may feel rougher and heavier.

In addition to haptic feedback, the new Pencil will include additional gestures for greater versatility. As 9to5Mac previously noted in code links, there will be a new “compression”; a gesture that calls up a context menu depending on the current task. For example, a pinch gesture could allow users to quickly trigger actions such as adding shapes, stickers, or text to the canvas.

In addition to accessories, on May 7 Apple will update its iPad hardware lineup for the first time in eighteen months, skipping 2023 altogether. The new iPad Pro line will feature OLED displays and maybe even an M4 chip. The iPad Air will also be updated, adding a larger 12.9-inch size for the first time.

Stay tuned to 9to5Mac for full coverage of all announcements with Apple ‘Let Free’ The event is scheduled for May 7.
