A new iOS 17.5 feature called Recovery State saves Find My feature on devices sent for repair.

Users will need to disable Find My when sending a device for repair, but this will change with the release of iOS 17.5. The new Recovery Status feature will support Find My throughout. the entire recovery process.

The code referencing this feature was originally discovered by user 9to5mac in the latest beta version of iOS 17.5, which was released to authorized developers on Tuesday. The new feature is designed to make repairs easier for both consumers and repair professionals by eliminating the need to uninstall Find My.

Before the recovery state, the requirement to disable Find My ensured that neither Apple nor an authorized service center would unknowingly work on a stolen iPhone.

In iOS 17.3, Apple introduced a security delay as part of its anti-stolen device protection that requires users to wait an extra hour before FindMy can be disabled when they are away from sensitive locations. This is a feature that prevents unauthorized users from changing the user's password or accessing sensitive data.

With the new state restore feature, there will no longer be a need to deal with said latency, but it appears to be missing a critical component — There is currently no option to disable this feature in the beta.

However, this may be a feature rather than a bug. Apple may not have implemented the ability to exit the repair state except to authorized repair technicians.

iOS 17.5 remains a relatively minor update as Apple is expected to announce its next generation of operating systems at WWDC on June 10.
