How to Get the Most Out of the iOS Calculator

Calculator app for iOS is not as simple as it seems let's continue.

At first glance, the default iOS Calculator app seems very simple. But the Calculator app has a few tricks up its sleeve.

The Calculator app is one of the simplest default apps available on the iPhone. However, what the app is like known to have never made it to the iPad, that's not the only interesting thing to know about it. Like most apps straight from Apple, the Calculator app has a lot of hidden utilities you should be aware of.

When you open the app, you're greeted with a basic numeric keypad, as well as the most basic calculator functions available. Behind this minimal interface lies a wealth of options that make the Calculator app much more than just a simple app.

Deleting minor errors

Touch screens can be great input devices, but touch screens also allow you to make the smallest input errors. In the Calculator app, you may be tempted to simply press the “C” button after an error and start typing the number again.

Removing a digit does not mean you need to remove an integer.

However, you have another option. If you make a small mistake while entering a number, you can simply swipe left or right on the number to delete the last digit. No matter which direction you swipe your finger, it will do the same. You just need to swipe your finger on or over the number.

Access to the scientific calculator

Perhaps one of the most famous iOS calculator tricks is accessing the functions of a scientific calculator within an app. Doing this is as simple as turning your phone into landscape mode while in the app.

The Scientific Calculator view can be useful for many functions.

In addition to accessing buttons for pi numbers, exponents, etc. ., entering the landscape version of the Calculator app will also allow you to enter more numbers. In portrait orientation, the iOS calculator only allows you to enter nine digits. In landscape orientation, the app will allow you to enter sixteen digits.

Copying and pasting

The calculations you often perform are just part of what you do you are working. In such cases, it may be convenient to copy the results or paste the number into a calculator. Fortunately, both functions are possible.

Copying numbers from a calculator can be a life saver when working with longer strings of numbers.

By simply holding your finger on the calculated result or wherever it is, you can either copy the current number or paste a new number. When copying the result, you don’t even have to go into the Calculator application itself.

In the App Library or Home screen, you can simply press and hold the Calculator app. The menu that appears will allow you to copy the latest result from your calculator. It copies everything that is displayed in your Calculator app, so if the last thing you did was type 5, the function will simply copy that 5.

Modify accessibility settings

If you need or want to make some changes to the appearance of the Calculator app, you can make such changes by changing the app's accessibility settings. To change settings, you simply need to set up a per-app settings profile for Calculator in Accessibility settings.

Changing accessibility settings can give your calculator a completely different look.

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Select Accessibility.
  3. Select Settings for each application.
  4. Select Add application.
  5. Select Calculator.
  6. Select Calculator again.

Once you're in the Per-App Settings menu for Calculator, you can visually change the app by choosing settings like bold or increased contrast. You can also make any accessibility changes to the Calculator app that you want.

With these quick tweaks and commands in your arsenal, Calculator can become a much more useful utility on your iPhone.
