Apple Vision Pro may be able to play SteamVR games thanks to developers who have begun porting open-source ALVR software source code.
ALVR is software that allows you to stream VR games to virtual reality headsets. The ALVR adaptation allows users to enjoy SteamVR games on Micro-OLED Apple Vision Pro displays.
However, interacting with these games requires a certain type of controller that tracks itself rather than being tracked by the headset.
This means that existing Bluetooth controllers or Quest 2, Quest 3, and Quest Pro headset controllers will not work. The Valve Index controller is compatible with ALVR, but it also requires a base station called a “beacon” for tracking.
Setting up ALVR is quite complicated. Building an ALVR project in Apple Vision Pro requires a Mac with Xcode.
And this is not autonomous. ALVR requires a high-end gaming PC to run and stream the game over your home network.
One of the developers working on the ALVR port for Apple Vision Pro said that he is working on support for hand tracking. Additionally, development of ALVR's Vision Pro port continues and changes are being made to make it more stable.
Given the complexity of the setup required, only a few people can use ALVR. At this time, it is unlikely that ALVR will appear in the App Store for VisionOS.
ALVR is currently available for use via GitHub. Those interested must compile the application themselves using their developer account and Xcode.
