iOS 17.4: Using Apple's New Podcast Transcription Feature

by Tim Hardwick

With iOS 17.4, which is currently in beta, Apple is adding audio transcripts to the Podcasts app for iPhone, meaning you can read your favorite podcasts straight out loud.

Apple is adding support for auto-generated transcripts in its Podcasts app, offering users another way to enjoy podcast content than just listening to what they say.

If you're familiar with the lyrics on Apple Music, they're very similar. While a podcast is playing, simply tap the speech bubble icon in the lower left corner of the full-screen media playback screen.

Click on the automatically generated transcript that appears so that it fills the entire screen. The transcript automatically scrolls and highlights currently spoken text as the episode plays, or you can scroll through the transcript manually and even click on a sentence to jump to that point in the podcast. Selected text can also be highlighted for copying and pasting elsewhere.

In addition, the Search button at the bottom of the screen allows you to search for specific words or phrases in the transcript and jump to that point. in the transcript, where you can then click to jump to the audio track.

Transcripts can also be viewed in the Next section of the Home tab. Simply long-press on a podcast episode to display a “View Transcript” option in the drop-down menu. If you're on the episode details page, click the ellipses button (three dots) in the top right corner to open the same option.

At the time of writing, not all podcast episodes have the correct transcripts . now, but Apple says transcripts of back catalog episodes will be added over time. Transcripts are available in English, French, German, and Spanish, and podcast hosts also have the option to upload their own transcripts instead of using the automatically generated version.

The transcripts feature is included with Apple's iOS. Update 17.4 is currently available to developers. Apple plans to unveil it to the public in March.
